It’s summertime in NYC, which
means ice cream trucks, melting
hot pavement, and, now, bike
sharing! I may not appreciate all
the novices salmoning against
traffic, but the Citibike program
is a huge step forward inmaking
the city more sane and livable.
Another win for NYC has
been the return of
Dahni-El
Giles
. He writes: “During the
summer of 2012, I decided to
turn the page in my life and
leave both Kraft Foods and
Chicago. My loose plan was to
travel around the world, start-
ing in Costa Rica. The evening
before boarding my flight to
Costa Rica, I was offered the
New York City regional director
role at Leadership for Educa-
tional Equity. After hiking in
the jungle, rafting the Pacuare
River, andmountain biking near
the Arenal volcano, I decided to
accept the position. The transi-
tion to New York City fromChi-
cago has been good so far. I live
five blocks from where I was
primarily raised in Bed-Stuy,
Brooklyn. Unscathed by Hur-
ricane Sandy, I volunteered for
the relief effort in Far Rockaway.
In terms of alumni, I’ve been
able to catch up with
Andy Bay
,
Vittorio Cottafavi
,
Ned Rauch
’94
,
Tim Wallack ’94
,
Nick
Cohen ’96
, and
Owen Weih-
man ’96
at Longhaul Farm,
managed by
Jason Angell
and
his awesome wife, Jocelyn.
Andy, Jason, Jocelyn, and I also
gathered for ‘FriendsGiving’ a
week before Thanksgiving. In
the city, I’ve been able to catch
up with
Shamika Lee ’98
,
Tanisha Ford ’98
,
CareyWag-
ner ’96
, and
Charles Best ’94
.
Hopefully, I’ll see more Paulies
throughout the year.”
New York has been the hub
of much SPS alumni activity of
late, including the SPS NewYork
City Anniversary party, with
Marlon Key
,
Thayer Walker
,
and Dahni-El represented, and
the Rock Brooklyn with the New
York City Pelicans gathering
coordinated by the omnipres-
ent Andy Bay, where Ned Rauch
’94 either did or didn’t burn his
guitar (if anyone can confirm, I
would greatly appreciate it).
Moving farther west,
Decker
Rolph
reports that “…second
son Thacher was born on Hal-
loween. He is a smiley, babbling,
and fun li’l guy. Big bro Leland
turned three at the end of June
and is transitioning into his role
pretty dang well. Jess and I had
an absolute blast last summer
at
ErikMcKee
’s wedding in Rio.
His bride, Christiana, is lovely
in every possible way. I was
deeply honored to participate
as a groomsman. Jess’s business
happyfamily (organic baby and
kids food) is still exciting, chal-
lenging, and rewarding. The
commercial real estate fund
I run is in harvest mode and
tracking very well, and I am
beginning to ponder my next
steps. Any Paulies heading to
Sun Valley or Boise, please hol-
ler. We would welcome a chance
to rendezvous.”
Former New Yorker
Jennie
Jones
has returned to her SoCal
roots and reports big news: “Last
year, I moved back to Southern
California for the first time since
I left for St. Paul’s, and, in Sep-
tember, I married
Carder Stout
’87
. So, after almost 20 years
of friendship,
Julie ‘Chicken’
Stout
and I are officially family.
I am still dreaming of all things
New York – love California, but,
man, I miss New York!”
Great to hear from
Mark Ed-
mond
with his first formnotes
update: “I moved from Boston
seven years ago and am look-
ing forward to another Seattle
summer with my wife, Susan,
and our 1-year-old daughter,
Ivy. By day, I develop software
at Amazon, and I’ve recently
started stealing moments be-
tween diaper changes to write
apps like “Nametrix.” Most im-
portantly, I now have a beard.”
And globetrotter
Geoff De-
Vito
shared this dispatch: “With
my M.A. in anthropology of
travel and tourism completed,
Matt Rudey
and I celebrated by
spending some time in Vietnam.
From Hanoi to Halong Bay to Ho
Chi MinhCity, wewere E’d by the
experience. It is safe to say that
our culinary exploits therewould
make Anthony Bourdain shiver.”
And that’s the news for the
Formof ’95. My sincere apologies
to everyone for missing our last
installment, and I hope everyone
is enjoying a great summer. As
always, please send me news or
let me know if you’re coming to
town. I’d love to catch up.
