A DREA:M OF A STORY I
'Twas a calm and peaceful night in the small city of Reus- enburg. Not a sound could be heard outside of the babies crying, boys and girls shouting, street cars rumbling past, carts going by with an occasional jolt as they ran over a dog or cat. Smely nothing could be more peacdul than this.
Suddenly shriek upon shriek rang out oYcr the atmosphere. They began with a low D, l'ambled up the scale to high B, and ended with a clea1·, high yodel. And such a sweet warbly voice they warbled from. Instantly the whole city was in confusion. Not a sound could be heard, except the hea,·y snoring of the policemen as they stood on the corners doing their duty. The shrieks bad shrirked forth from :Main Street.
Snicker Snooks, the great detective, was standing on a ()Orner, disguised as an ash can, when the shrieks came float- ing softly to his ears. Instantly he was awake. Taking a ye11ow coat from his pocket, he put it on and was disguised as 1 'Reusenburg's Special." He went skipping up to Main St.
So quick was he that he got there ahead of fifty-three people.
Immediately he began to investigate. lle entered the house 011 tip-toe, so that he would not wake the servants. There lying on the floor was :Maggie :hlinks, one of the high- brows of the city.
