Our friend, tho Bohemian, walked with a brisk stride, emerged from a dark and nnnow side street, into one of wider pretentious and slightly greater ilhnnino~ity. Upon turning the corner, Le collided with a man, who nl:;o seemed in a Lmry. After disentangling himself nnd murmuring an apology, tho Bohemian stnrted to pnss on, but upon glanc- ing at tho man a second time, he stopped) started, theu ex- claimed with a ring of pleasure, at the same time extending his band, "Jason!"
The man looked startled, and then, in a surprised tone, muttered, "~Ieroux."
There followed the usual reunion scene which is often obsen·ed when two friends meet. They soon sought out a small all night restaurant and were shortly engrossed in French food and rapid com·ersntion, the Bohemian, cddently forgetful of the small square box in the right-band pocket of his coat.
IV
To rehtrn to the scene of the dark and gloomy room. Nothing has changed since we left,-with the siugle excep- tion of the fire, which is becoming less and less like fire e\·ery moment, and of course, with its exit, adds more gloom.
A step is beard outside of the door-then the rasping of a key being fitted in the lock. The girl upon tho bed stirs slightly,-then raises her bead, 011d in her eyes is a fire of eager expectation. The lock is heard to turn, then ~he knob' rattles-the door opens and the form of a man fills the space.
'·Father," she gaspi!, "Father, is it you?" "Yes, my dear," came the answer.
"Ob, Father, did you get them~~~
"I did, bnt wait until I make u light."
