The bulk of the talk consisted of a description of the beliefs of the people preceding Harvey's time. The
most important of these were (I) That the blood flowed from the liver to the heart, and that the body contained two kinds of blood, each adding a separate circulatory sys- tem; (2) The function of the heart was to mix the blood; (3) The blood was moving slowly and irreg-
ularly.
The importance of Harvey's life
was illustrated in the talk by the summary and discussion of the more important of Harvey's discoveries, among which were: (1) That the heart controls the pulse, squeezing the blood through the arteries and the pressure of the blood within the
arteries causing enlargement. (2)
That the heart is composed of four
chambers,, the blood passing indi-
rectly from the left to right. (3)
