ON BALK BY PITCHER
Ashton and Charlie Harris Pitch for Garnet and White Nine
On May 6, at Johnson Field, the V. E. S. nine was defeated in a very close game by the Salem High School team with a score of 5 to 4. The game was well played and ex- citing up to its close. The oppos- ing batteries for the beginning of the game were: H. Crosswhite and J. Oro white for Salem and J. Ash- ton and Hamner for V. E. S.
The first three Salem men at bat were retired in short order. At the Garnet team's term at bat Gray, who
topped the line-up, led of!' with a single and was fin_ally brought in with a single by Luck.
In the sixth when V. E. S. came to bat Gulick walked. Clemens fol- lowed with a single, and then Luck drove one over the bank for a homer; making the score, 4-1. The next inning, Garrison went on the mound for Salem and he was in turn re- placed by J. Crosswhite in the eighth.
In the seventh Mr. Gannaway sent Gulick in for Clemens in left field. Sikes, B. M. A. lead-of!' man, was
out from Hobbs to Roe. Davis hit to Hobbs, who missed, and Davis was sale on first. Davis was safe on second after an error by Bucky Har- ris. Steel hit safely over second, Davis scored and Steel took second. Chandler hit to Charlie Harris and
Steele went out at third. Royster wa out on a fly to shortstop.
For V. E. S. Charlie Harris struck out, Banff walked and then stole sec- ond. Hobbs and Roe struck out to
make three away. In the eighth, All- good for B. M. A., doubled to left, but the team retired and left him on base. Gulick got on first because of an error by the center fielder. Gul- ick stole second and the side was
out.
In the ninth Davis hit to right
field for three bases but died on the bag. Gray was put in to hit for Bucky Harris but popped it to sec- ond. The next two men were also out. In the tenth, Royster was safe on a hit over second. Crockett was
out and Allgaod hit a long fly to
Luck. Wooten hit to center field and
Royster scored. Goodson wa.S out at

bat for Hobbs when the Garnet and
