The record of the school's 1940 basketball team was hardly more than average in the won-and-lost
column, but the schedule was prob- ably one of the hardest a V. E. S. quint ever faced. Prospects were bright at the opening of the season,
and the team played well, despite the frequent absence of regulars
from the lineup due to illness.
The highlight of the season was the fine, yet heartbreaking, showing
the team made in the State Prep race. The Bishops opened play in the Conference with a thrilling 28-21 victory over Woodberry For-
est here. A week later the Gamet and White team journeyed to Epis- copal High and staged a "hair-
raiser," but finally wound up on the short end of a 26-23 score. In a re- turn game with Woodberry, Coach Bond's proteges removed all doubt that they could lick the Foresters
on a big floor by dishing out a se- vere 24-5 trouncing to the home team. In the meantime, St. Chris- topher's had defeated Episcopal,

Coach Bond's team fared none too well in winning only eight of fourteen games, but the Bishops came mighty close to winning the state prep title; and often looked good in games they lost. Easter at Home Featttres Spring Vacation as Time of Swinging Wide the Gates Nears
Not long ago a dejected and tired group of boys returned to school. Some were homesick, others too
sad to be worried. The Christmas holidays were over and it was sixty- odd days until the next short let-up came. Now there are no signs of
sadness or worry, for the spring holidays are slightly less than twen- ty-four hours away. T o be exact,
only 18 hours, or 1,080 minutes, or 64,800 seconds separate us from home and what goes with it. At one
o'clock tomorrow the gates of the "Institution" will swing open and the one hundred and twenty odd in- mates will rush as one for trains,
busses, or any other mode of get- ting away from the "fair" city of
Lynchburg.
