ROOSEVELT HOLDS OVER W. L. WILLKIE
Mr. SV'tull Stunned as His Idol Goes Down in Defeat-Lord Mattfield Remains Silent
. An au~st assembly of great and !tttle brams gathered in historic ses-
sion on Wednesday night to poll a narrow. but decisive victory for Frank!tn Delano ("just call me Frank") Roosevelt to continue in office for the next four years. The official ( ?) count rendered 69 for Roosevelt and 54 for Willkie. This was a stunning blow to the Willkie camp, headed by Mr. Shull of Dem- ocratic First West Dorm and A. C. Sayer of Third Main (the dorm of many "isms"), who both believed that their leader would landslide the
dear old school right off of its faun- elations.
FIRST DANCE PROVES
TO BE GREAT SUCCESS
New ~oys Meet Lynchburg Girls. Jimmy Slater's Orchestra Brings Tar Heel Music
The first dance of the 1940-41 school year was held in the Barks- dale Memorial Gymnasium Satur- day night, October 19, 1940.
Music .was provided by an up and commg North Carolina band under the direction of Jimmy Slaytor.
This dance proved to be excep- tionally good in many unexpected ~ays. Usually the news boys are a bit shy at the first dance since they are swamped by a large group of
strange damsels. But this time it looked like eighty pairs of old friends dancing. Also the orchestra was very good and this proved to be a pleasing surprise to everyone. The hop committee had been a little shaky before the dance over what this strange orchestra would turn
out to be, but it is well pleased with its selection now.
.Much credit is due the Hop Com- mittee under the able leadership and. organization of their faculty advi.ser, W. H. Armstrong, for their effic1ent transportation of the girls and general handling of the decora- tions and music.
Delight f u I refreshments were served at intermission with Mrs. Banks and Mrs. Gannaway helping at the punch bowl.
Present were: Miss Kitty Davis with Billy Smith, Miss Margaret Ann Hopkins with Grover Dillon Miss Helen Owen with Tom Kirk~ patrick, Miss Grace Lloyd with ~infield Worth, Miss Betty Clark with Frank Trafton, Miss Mary
Virginia Evans with Arch Alex- ander, Miss Mary Ambler Thoma- son with Billy Lambert, Miss Ann Fruehauf with Jay C. Bullen, Miss

Another Woodberry score in the last quarter was called back be- cause the umpire ruled the runner stepped out of bounds on the V. E.

In the first quarter, after an ex-
change of punts, Buddy Thach, the Tiger righ_t half-back, kicked to the V. E. S. one-inch line, where the ball was downed by a Woodberry player. Charlie Schoew then made a beautiful punt which traveled in the air about 50 yards, but Fuller
