Way back in the autzmm of 19-1-4 V. E. S. began its atlzletic season by dmc•ning Miller School, 26-13. in the opming football ga11zc. This was the first game under 11e1.v coach, George Rell. Hargrm•e came next and the Hishops 7.von more easily tlzan the I3-0 score indicates. Then came mze of the most talked of ganzes of tlze season when the Gar- net eleven outfought and outplayed the heavier Tigers from Woodberry Forest only lo see llze game end in a 6-6 lie. /I last minute pass saved llze Orange and Black from defeat. Ne.rl 1veek V. E. S. tra1reled /o Waynesboro and trampled Fish- buntc in a scoring melee, 41-2-1-. Again !titling the road the Bishops toppled F.piscopal !Iigh in a never- lo-be-forgotten game. 6-0.
After this injuries beset the lzitlzerto undefeated team. R.-M. A. and St. Christopher toppled th e Rislzops, 13-0 and 48-0. respecti<.ref'v. Had the team been at full strengih the story of the game with tlze Saints might have befll different.
Basketball
A-Ir. Bell took Ott his second coach- ing job of the year as the basketball season began. Paced by three re- turni11g lettermen, the Bishop fi1•c opmed with two decisive wins, 37- 19 over Bedford High and 43-24 over Hargrmre. Then came disaster with Woodberry doing the dirty
work, 65-18. Just what happened is Izard to say. ffo1<'ever, the V. E. S. fi'l.'C got up from the floor and fought back with five straight wins, Williams a1td Lee lopping the scor- ing. First Fork Union was beaten 47-42. Then in quick succession the following were defeated: Hampden- Sydney Junior V arsity, 45-23; Fishburne, 40-32; Ilargrave, 47-19; and Massenullen, 51-23. Another debacle struck as the boys in Gar- net bowed lo H'oodberr:y Forest, 44-22. 1\'ex/, V. E. S. traveled to Fishburne and, despite the lack of ice skates for the hockey rink on which they played fought /o the end, losing 38-36 in the second overtime period. Fork Union entertained the Bishops and lost a 28-26 decisi01t in a thriller. St. Chrisloplzers end- ed a successful season for V. E. S. in an mzsuccessful fashion by trouncing it 58-30.

By then it 1L'as defi- nitely rstablished that a hot and cold. baseball season was i11 the cards. A trip to Fishbume netted a 9-8 loss. E. II. S. came here and /hanks lo 5 ruus in the ninth won a hard fought ga111e, 8-2. Fishburne journeyed to L}•nchburg and 1.vas handed a sound 12-7 drubbing.
