Basketball
Thirty-three boys showed up this year for a try-out for the varsity. Coach Barnum began working on fundamentals the first day and soon was able to tell who he might keep for the varsity. Most of the boys that were cut went into the seventeen and under. The remaining eighteen are Small, Andrews, R. White, Carty, Williams, G. Thomas, J. Thomas, C. Lewis, G. Lewis, Maddux, D. White, W . J ackson, H. Jackson, F. Akers, Ogden, Thompson, Ba t t I e and Stoughton. From the above eighteen Barnum hopes to get three teams that will work together sucessfully. The hardwood mentor is using a fast break system of play that will im- prove as the season goes on. Sev- eral boys are in neck to neck positions for +he starting five. Small and An- drews will be fighting for the starting center position. C. Lewis, Williams, G. Thomas and Maddux are battling for the forward slots and G. Lewis, Battle, Stoughton and Carty are work- ing for the guard po~itions. In the last few days' practice the team as a whole seems very much improved al-
though much practice on passing, blocking and working together is needed before January 17th.
Baby Bishops - Once more the Baby Bishops have buckled down to another season of basketball. After a few rather rough days of practice the Junior Varsity much to Mr. Wyatt's and Mr. Phelps' relief, is beginning to look like a basketball rather than a football team.
Mr. Phelps has had to start from scrakh with the 17 and Under to pro- duce a basketball team. Most of last year's squad now composes the varsity team. But the 1947 I5 and Under plus the newcomers and a few of last year's 17 and Under ~hould make a pretty good team.
Mr. Wyatt had a pretty good sea- son last year with the I5 and 13 and Under and hopes to have even a better season in '48. However, they are handicapped in the same way as the 17 and Under by losing all of last year s squad.
But from the 30 odd boys that turnsd out for practice, Mr. Phelp~ and Mr. Wyatt should turn out some pretty good teams.
