Counselor-Letterman Banquet
Dr. Barton then called on the co-
captains of each team for the year
to speak, having to flip a coin to
choose between them. Sam Peirson
spoke to us representing the football
team and season. The next speech
was for basketball, and by "luck"
Sam was chosen again. Later to rep-
resent baseball, the toss up proved
that Fred Schilling lost to "B B"
Thompson and he spoke for the base-
ball team. The last speech among the \ boys was given by George Barlow, representing the track team, who won
the toss from Sam Peirson. Sam didn't mind.
The next part of the meeting was turned over to Mr. Gannaway who gave a very sincere talk that reached the hearts of all the boys and mode us ever more proud of our teams. Mr. Gannaway then gave out the monogram certificates of baseball and track. The meeting was again turned over to Dr. Barton who intro- duced the main speaker of the eve- ning, Mr. McKenna. Mr. McKenna is line coach at V. M. I. He spoke to us, u~ing as a theme, the preservation of college athletics and athletic scholar- ships to certain boys and gave many examples of successful one-time ath- letes. He also told us of the Physical Education programs at various col- leges and explained many misunder- stood points. In all, a very fine talk.
The sad, but happy, ending came as we sang "Auld Lang Syne." It had been a very memorable evening to all of us.
P. S. Our fondest appreciation to Mrs. Bates and her kitchen staff whose hard work and long planning made this banquet possible. It is events such as these, "Ma," that make a boy remember V. E. S. long after he is gone from here; and in those memories we will ever recall you, our "Ma" away from home.

6--"Sieepy" Owens Jones leaves his Model A jalopy to Dr. Barton singing the "Cross Them Wirls" Boogie. He also leaves a wrecked Model A to the junkman. (He sang himself to sleep.)
The annual
banquet was held last Saturday, May 31st, from 7:00 P. M. until 8:30 P. M. The banquet itself proved very de- lightful. beginning with an appetizer of tomato juice and very nice fruit salad. The main course consisted of steak, French fried potatoes and green peas. On the side there were candied peaches and mixed nuts. For dessert we were served strawberry short-cake.

It proved to be a grand and de- licious meal; so settling back with full stomachs the meeting was turned over to Dr. Barton, who made the introductions for the speakers of the evening. He called our attention to the pretty sprays of flowers on each table and then to the man who had furnished those flowers this year, and many times in the past. The generous giver was an old V. E. S. alumnus, Mr. John McKenna of Lynchburg, Va.
