there with the school. I have had lots o f schooling since leaving V. E. S. and I can tell you in all truthfulness that your trigonometry class was one of the finest experiences that I have had. I am also in a position now bet- ter to appreciate your efforts since I am called upon increasingly to as- sist my twelve year old daughter with her math.
With regard to Massie, who many years ago moved away from Wood- stock, I was not able to find out very much. He has been married twice. There were two children by the first wife, and I think they are in her cus- tody. He has one child by his second wife, and they live in Wilmington, Delaware, where Bill works f o r du- Pont. I do not know the nature of his work. I a)'Tl sorry this is all I was able to find out. I have not seen Bill for some fifteen years, and this informa- tion came from a woman who was probably the best friend of the fam- ily when they lived here.
As for myself, I can, of course, tell you more. You may remember that I went to VMI after leaving VES. I graduated in 1939 and went imme- diately into the army. In 1942 I was commissioned in the regular a•my. Before the end of the war I served in Ireland, England, and North Africa. Long before the end of the war I had decided that the soldier's life was not for me, and I resigned my commission in 1946. Meanwhile, in
1940, I had married Alice Blades of Baltimore. Our first child, Anne, was born the following year and our sec- ond, Pat Jr., in 1942. In 1946 Patty was killed in a very tragic accident. This happened just after my resigna- tion from the army had become ef- fective and as I was starting qraduate work at the University of California in Berkeley. In 1948 I received my M.A. in history there, and in 1953 I finally got my Ph.D. I am now a mem- ber of the history department at the University of Maryland.
If we are ever in the vicinity of Lynchburg we shall certainly not fail to visit the school. I would like for my wife and daughter to see the place where it seems now that I spent some of the most constructive years of my life. Certainly I was not aware of this at the time; nor could it have been very apparent to my teachers. By now I imagine your children are grown and have made a grandfather of you
several times. The only contact I have (Continued on p11ge 15, col. I)
