In the death of Robert Cla:k Atherholt on October 22 Vir- gin ia Episcopal School has lost a treasured friend. As a patron of the School for more than six years, he has always taken a genuine interest in the School as a whole as well as in the success of his two sons. His ma- terial benefactions to us, both direct and indirect, have made possible great improvements in our buildings. We of the School mourn his untimely death and we offer our heartfelt sympathy to his sorrowing family.
EDITORIAL
On October 22nd the Bishops went down to a 33-6 defeat at the hands of a much heavier and more exper- ienced Fishburne team. This coming on the heels of the Woodberry de- feat would dishearten most teams. The Fishburne game greatly added to our team 's confidence, however. Here they were, an unsubsidized team, playing a group of scholarship boys t o a 13-0 half.
This school has never believed in ath letic scholarships. They hold the opinion that a school's primary func- tion is to improve the mind, not the body. In recent years, subsidized athletics have invaded al l levels of competition. Even in high schools, coaches go out of their way to lure promising prospects into their school district. In colleges, the buying of football teams is an established prac- tice. The successful teams may put the school on the map, but they cer- tainly don't enhance its scholastic reputation .
Recently one of our nearby state universities almost lost its rating as an accredited institution. It had spent too much money buying brawny young men and not enough purchasing test tubes and Bunsen burners. The school that has both a high scholastic rating and good
