V. E. S. DOWNS SAINTS
IN REVENGE CONTEST
The V.E.S. baseball team won what was probably its sweetest vic- tory of the season when they downed the St. Christopher Saints 3-1 in a contest in Richmond. The victory gave the Bishops a winning 3-2 prep school record, and avenged an earlier defeat byo the Richmond team.
The Saints scored one run in the first on a walk, followed by a single and a sacrifice bunt, while the Bish- op's first run came in the second, when Cunningham singled and Jos- lyn walked. Dale Carter hit a ground ball to the third baseman, forcing Cunningham, but Joslyn was safe at second. Cole drove Joslyn in with a line-drive single. The final runs came in the fifth, when Cunningham singled, ·and Joslyn hit a home run.
V.E.S. played excellent defensive ball, as Coach Lee moved Edmunds in to play third and switched Frank Gray to first as a replacement for Wentz, who broke his arm in the Woodberry game.
GLASS DOWNS BISHOPS IN 5-2 HOME CONTEST
E. C. Glass High defeated the Bishops 5-2, and gained revenge for an earlier defeat at the hands of the V.E.S. team. The Bishops started the scoring in the second when Dan Floyd connected for a homer with nobody on. In the third, Cunning- ham singled and stole second, and Edmunds singled, driving in Cunning- ham, to make the score 2-0.
Glass won the game in the fifth, when they scored four runs on three hits and two Bishop errors, and added a final run in the sixth to

BASEBALL SEASON CLOSES WITH WIN OVER JEFFS

The Magicians took the lead in the first on a walk and a triple, and the two teams went scoreless until the fourth inning, when Dan Floyd singled to left center. Cole singled, and Floyd was safe on third. Neil Hunt followed with a line drive to the first baseman, but a wild throw to the pitcher covering first gave Cole and Floyd an opportunity to score.
The game was called after 50 In- nings on account of rain.
Sandy• Cunningham was the lead- ing batter for VES during the '59 season, with an overall mark of .404, as he led the Bishop sluggers through one of their better seasons.
JEFFERSON 5, V. E. S. 4
V.E.S. lost a heartbreaker io Jef- ferson of Roanoke. The Bishops had a 4-3 lead going into the 6th, and the fi rst two Jefferson batters were put out. After a walk and a single, a high fly to left field was misjudged, and the winn ing runs scored.
The Bishops scored three in the first inning. Cunningham, and Floyd singled, and Carter hit a triple, Cole walked, setting up a double steal that scored Carter.
The Bishop's fourth run came in the 3rd on 4 singles by Hunt, Richardson, Gray, and Cunningham.
JUNIOR VARSITY
The Junior Varsity lost their sec- ond game of the season to Nelson County, 4-0. The Junior Bishops were unable to connect with the southpaw offerings of Smith. Hor- tenstine led with two hits. Stanfield started for the Junior Bishops and

Nelson County-Smith and Devers.
The J.V .'s lost their third straight qame, 7-3, to the Bedford Otters. The Otters broke a 3-3 tie with four
runs in the eighth inning. Adams allowed the Junior Bishops only five hits, Hicks getting 2-for-3 to lead the Bishop batters. Wood started and was relieved in the eighth by Stanfield.

A. M. A.'s COYNER PITCHES ONE HITIER, 10-1
Backed up by the one-hit pitching of Kenny- Coyner, the AMA baseball team downed the Bishops I0- 1. The Bishops only hit came on a single by Cunningham in the fourth, and the single run was scored when Floyd walked, was sacrificed to third, and came home on an AMA error. AMA had six hits and nine walks, and downed the Bishops with little trouble.

The Baseball Bishops closed
the season with a 3-2 victory over J efferson of Roanoke, aveng ing a 5-4 defeat by the Jeffs on the pre- vious Saturday. The win gave the team an 8-6 season record, many of them close ones.
