VOL. XLVIII LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA, OCTOBER, 1964 VIRGINIA EPISCOPAL SCHOOL NUMBER I

V. E. S. is now in its 49th session. In a mere half centurr, we have been witnessing our schoo grow by leaps and bounds. Yet the changes are subtle ones. Although Bishop Jett, our founder, today would see many physical cha nges, he· would concede that the essence or the atmosphere of Virginia Episcopal School has re- mained the same. The 'full stature of manhood' is still as much a goal now as it was fifty years ago. It is still a goal left for us to reach. The at- tainment of this goal is a project which takes all our support.
V. E. S. is our school. We alumni, faculty, students, friends, and trustees make it what it is. We are the one~ who take an interest in the school.
It is left to us to decide whether this istobeagoodorabadyear. Inthe last 49 years we have accomplished much; yet, much is left to be de- sired. We have achieved a great many physical necessities-the rest is up to us. We get out of school what we put in-whether it be sports, edu- cation, or just a diploma. If we plant nothing, we harvest nothing.
If we want it to be-'64-'65 will be the best school year yet.
HOMECOMING
Virginia Episcopal School an- nounces to all parents and alumni its annual Homecoming Day, Saturday, October 31. This will be a day full of good things; and you are urged to be here and to play a vital role in the celebration. Among other things, there will be a football game, a cross country meet, a reception, and con- ferences. In addition, tours of the School will be conducted periodically during the morning, and there will be plenty of time for rejuvenating old friendships and making new ones.
Below is a schedule of the day's events:
9:00A.M. Registration of parents and alumni begins.
II :OOA. M. Meeting of parents. 12:00 noon Meeting of alumni;
7:15 P. M. Dinner at School for ai boys with dates for the
dances. 9:00-12:00 Dance.
The School has begun its 49th session with more masters, more boys and more buildings than ever before in its history. With better facilities we believe we are in a better position than ever to live and learn together intelligently and profitably.
The Trustees have been courageous and ambitious in the program of re· habilitation and enlargement they have undertaken. They have ventured to incur a debt for the advantage of
the boys with whom we are concerned here and now.
But every penny put to the man· agement of this debt siphons from the quality, the depth of the job we can do for these boys. The School. like other good schools, will advance as its alumni and other friends realize that it not only de· serves but needs their love and in- terest and support. It needs them to send good boys its way, to criticize constructively, and to come and see.
The fund campaign continues as it must. All who care should let the School know. One good way is to return October 31st for Homecom-
