Saturday morning. Wind and cold drives bell dedication into gym.
Bells, breakfast; Anticipation, knowing she'll be better-looking than when you left; More bells, inspection - Homecoming begins.
'They must be here someplace ... really, how can we have homecoming
without name tags?"
"Behind the door; they won't come to the room anyway." a phone call
"You can't what?''
Posters, signs . . . WELCOME ALUMNI; Coffee and doughnuts; Three
cars arrive.
"My hair! How would you do this?! The
whole school's going to be watching and . . . I think I'll kill you; As soon as this ridiculous thing is over, I'm going to personally destroy you with my bare hands."
"Look, you want a streamer, you pull it down yourself."
"Looked nice, Bert."
Check out; Hollins Mal; Miller Park; Two months is a long time.
"Why? Huh; Why? Has any other car ever stalled in the middle of the Mill?'' "Oh, I don't know; they've got swings, seesaws, chin-up bars; all sorts of things
to do."
"You sure we already did? ... oh ... Well, then how dOOut one for the road?'' "But sir, it was only three minutes."
Lunchtime. Good Eats at Joe's.
Streamers down; Chairs up for chapel; A well-polished lectum; Breakfast at the Holiday Inn.
"If he wants to have chapel in the .gym, let him move his own chairs."
"Well what did you expect me to say? ... The stove burns out at the restau- rant, we have cold cereal an hour late, and then you tell me lunch permissions were
at 10:30."
Chapel and bleachers
"If you look on with Mother, and Mary leans to the right a little, then Bob and John can look over your shoulder, and I'll just fake the words."
"I thought the Salvation Army used trumpets." Last meal out, dinner; Signing out for the fifth time.
"Sure chicken salad's great, Mom, but I'd kinda thought of steak, maybe." "''m sorry, but just be glad it was water and not gravy."
"Whaddaya mean no chocolate sundaes?''
Tired perhaps, but a happy-tired; Thanksgiving's not that far away anymore.
" . . . I'm glad; so did 1."
"I don't care if we were first, you still didn't have to drive like a maniac." "Pretty good ... How 'bout you?"
"No, I'm not being punished; I really enjoy raking leaves, it's sort of my
way of saying "Happy Homecoming."
"You're sure you wouldn't rather see the chapel first?'' "Good Lord, Frank look at that boy's hair!"
Cars arriving constantly; Two meet- ings at once; An outdoor concert, the mistake looks planned; The belltower is dedicated; Finally lunch, cold and windy.
"Now wait a minute, the bee Hew into the hull's stomach and when the bull woke up, the bee wasn't there?"
"And Frank, the way that it Hips up in the back and curls over his glasses." "But you didn't tell me it was formal."
The Game. Sign of the times for Bishops.
After ebapel. ADd It wu over . . .
Dan Thomasson chews cup with friend.
A line on the field at 2:30; The game, still cold; Shelton breaks loose; Ses- sions breaks wrist; Carolina looks bad; Cheerleaders from Seven Hills.
"Oh, they couldn't have hidden the programs too, could they?''
"But I thought a punt was when
the guy hands the ball to the quarter-
back."
"That's right Steve, just let it hang,
beautiful ... O.K. now grimace like it really hurts ... click, great; Thanks . . . oh, Steve you can stop grimacing
now."
X-country runs, a win; The game is
over, a11other win - - - a perfect day.

"That ... oh yeah, it's a football."
"But I thought the lights were supposed to blink."
"I can't understand it. He doesn't look like a band member ... I could have sworn that he used to be the admissions officer."
