Tom Purdie seems to have fallen asleep under the effects of music, but his outstretched finger obviously proves that he is faking.
Freshmen Use Spare Time In Divers Ways
Since the academic schedule for freshmen was relatively light compared with the other classes, ninth graders usually· had more spare time
on their hands. This time was often spent
in a variety of constructive ways: raising the flag in front of the school, cleaning up the rec room, and making counselors' beds. Yet there were also the colorful bull sessions that endlessly took place in some tiny room on Pendleton, and the possibility of not finding a freshman
in the pool room hardly ever arose.
But in a very real way, all of these
seemingly unuseful activities did play an extremely important part in the education of each freshman, for by his non-academic association with others in school life, he developed a social attitude that would influence him throughout his stay at V.E.S.
Almost every student, including Will Martin, spends a good bit of his time sleeping off the effects of boredom produced by study.
