1976 was a year in which the

Like America, V.E.S. is not
without its founding fathers. Among the men responsible for the early beginnings of the
school there are five who stand out as being the most influential
in establishing the school we have come to know. They were, as pictured, Robert Carter Jett (seated, front row at far left), Ellis
N. Tucker (seated front row center), Thomas Kinloch Nelson (front row, right of center), Henry W. Mattfield (standing,
back row, eight from left), and Hardy C. Dillard (absolute
center).
Robert Carter Jett was the founder of V.E.S. A minister in his early life, it was his dream in
l9l3 to raise money for an
Episcopal preparatory school for
boys near Lynchburg. He was its
first headmaster, and left V.E.S.

Coach Foster, head coach of the soccer team, just after he left a high level Athletics Meeting had only one thing to say, " I
tried to convince them that letting the soccer team practice in Florida would not only increase our skill, but give the players a chance to relax and enjoy life the way it should
be."

"I wanted to get back in time to discuss Martin Luther's 95 Theses with Mr. Garmey. All I
could think about was those 95 Theses - that was when I slipped off the icy road down
an embankment." ***

described as what we considered Billy Peebles to be - a young, dedicated instructor, who was as much a friend as a teacher. He remained on the faculty for more
than 20 years.
Hardy C. Dillard was a
member of the first student body at V .E.S . He graduated in 1919, a senior at the age 'bf 16, and went on to become a judge on the
International Court of Justice at The Hague.
There are many others who have contributed greatly to the fiber of Virginia Episcopal
School. But these five men, our "founding fathers," left a larger impact than most. It is to them that we owe appreciation for creating and helping to establish V .E.S. and its fine reputation in
many fields.

A main reason for the shortage of entrepreneurs may be found in the attitudes and values of
today's youth ... Today's young achievers are achievers in terms of grades, in terms of others'
views of themselves - as they go forward from school to work they still need someone to grade them. And in our meritocracy,
the most widely recognized post- school grade is the amount of money someone elso will pay you to work for him ... Charles
Peters, Washington Monthly. ***
MR. GARMEY: "My New Year's Resolution is to limit the
number of demerits I give out per week to 110. Of course I won't be able to stick to this ... get the pun? ... ha, ha ... stick to this. Don't you get it? Oh well, you
know as well as I do that when I get in the mood, demerits are apt to fly. In fact, I think I'll give you 20 demerits now for asking me such idiotic questions. By the
way, have you taken complete leave of your senses? I believe so, and that'll earn you 10 more. Oh yeh, and before I forget, I'm also giving you 15 for not properly
appreciating my joke."
