Varsity Basketball BY BILL WALLACE
With only six players returning, and while none of these six were consistent starters last season, the varsity basketball squad seems doomed for a rebuilding season. Second year Coach Fletcher Gregory has worked the players hard in practice and has discovered much talent, but a lack of experience and a lack of poise in the second half of most games has held the team to only a 3-9 record overall, and 2-4 in the prep league with six prep league games remaining. Yet Coach
s urpri se
Bishops posted a 72-0 rout over Natural Bridge, another first in VES wrestling.
Giving momentum to the team are six returning lettermen. Of these, three have prep league title, and one has a state
championship title. This year may bring other state titles with hopefuls Charlie Bond (HWT) and Kevin Connell (105) contending. Joey Reid, who won
the state tourney at 112, is ineligible to wrestle in the tourney again this year, but he hopes to show his abilities when the Bishops go to the Nationals in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. This is the first time that VES will have ever competed on a national level, and Coach Keifer feels this is the team to do it with.
Not including the Woodberry win, the roster records are as follows:
98 Eric Bowman 3-2 105 Kevin Connell 3-1 112 Chris Connell 3-2

The Bishops soccer team still has quite a few Prep League games ahead of them, and with a little more determination and dedication, they should be able to·change their 0-3 Prep League record to a winning one. It is difficult to raise spirits a nd avoid the apathy which can come with such a disappointing beginning as the team has had, but it certainly has the potential to turn its season around. With some outside support from the other teams, VES could see "The new varisty soccer team." Maybe they'll have a little more luck

usually a dependable and substantial Prep League threat, has gotten off to a disappointing start this year. Its 0-4 record does not look very impressive, yet the figures do not necessarily speak for the real ability of the team.
Begifted with unusually good weather this year, the team got off to a high-spirited start led by co-captains Robert Brailsford and James Hopkins. By using some of the fundamental practice routines learned during
the fall soccer program and blending them with full field scrimages, the team began to fall
