Services to
School Are Often Overlooked
In the course of each busy day at VES, the community tends to overlook the many services rendered by the school staff. How often do students realize just how much the secretaries work every day, or how many checks the business office cashes for students? These along with others, such as the Alumni office, infirmary, bookstore, maintenance crew and kitchen are too frequently taken for granted.
For instance, the community understands the job of the alumni office to raise money, the infirmary to treat sick students, the bookstore to distribute books, and the kitchen staff to prepare meals. However, the work done by these support personnel and others behind the scenes is rarely acknowledged. The alumni office (now
computerized) continuously updates its files on former students and is busy sending bulletins, appeals and other school information to thousands of alumni. The infirmary must order and renew prescriptions, make medical ap- pointments, and keep track of student health files. The maintenance staff busies itself with the task of keeping the school plant operating smoothly, and the custodial staff picks up after all of us. Few members of the community are awake when members of the kitchen staff arrive at 4:30 a.m. to begin preparation of breakfast. We all need to take the time and make the effort to acknowledge the many people who work year-round for us unnoticed and unthanked.
