Katrin lives in Wuppertal
FRG, a city of 300,000 near Col· ogne and Dusseldorf. She has two brothers, Christian (22) and Jobst (19). She loves America and the people here, and surpr· ingly enough is not the least bit
homesick.
Katrin believes the work at
VES is harder on a daily basis but easier on a term basis than back home. In Germany, the stu· dent's grades depend on 2 tests given at the end of each semester

There are many new faces on campus this year. Among them is
Katrin Anne Upmeier, who is at· tending VES on the ASSIST pro- gram. The ASSIST program allows foreign students to ex· perience American culture by at· tending specially chosen high schools throughout the United
States. The students who are eventually chosen to fill these positions are selected from more than 800 applicants.
All applicants underwent rigorous screening of their knowledge of the English
language. Of those that apply, only 70-80 are finally selected.

THE METEOR
OCTOBER 17. 1986
By Daniel Rickenmann This year VES has a large number of new faculty members. The 'Meteor' met with them and asked them about their past and
first impressions of VES. (first of two parts).
George Arlotto graduated from Lynchburg College in 1985. He did not plan on becoming a teacher, it just happened. Now that he's getting settled, he real· ly loves it. Mr. Arlotto's main goal is to help his students grow academically, athletically, morally and socially. He has no future plans other than to teach
math and biology and live day-to- day.
Laura Gray Street teaches lOth and 12th grade English. Sl)e graduated from Hollins College 1984 and continued her educa· tion at UV A, where she received a MA in English. She really en· joys her first experience with teaching and is excited about be- ing at VES in the first year of co- education. Being a native Vir-

Did anyone notice the new
driveway? Well, some people have and the responses are great. The driveway's primary function is "for traffic flow and to get the entrance out of the park- ing lot." Not only does the drive- way decrease the jam of day students and delivery van wan-
ting to get out, but it provides a new and attractive look to the
chool. The driveway was one of
three projects including the new
brick gates and the chapel's brick terrace.
