The varsity baseball team this
year has many new talents as well as returning veterans. The starting lineup consists of some
really big guns. Leading the batting order is senior Matt Joyner, followed by first base- man Hunt Whitehead. Senior
Jamie Sligh bats third and is considered one of the best
batsmen in the prep league. Clean-up position is held by the
newcome Mundy Hackett. The last two iron men are co-captain Johnston Cox and junior hitting sensation William Sligh.
Bringing up the bottom of the order are Tripp Edwards, Jim
Parrott and Andrew Joyner.
The first game of the 1987 season was against Holy Cross.

The 1987 varsity lacrosse team split its first six games: losing to
Western Albemarle High School 13-4, top-ranked Collegiate 10-8 and Woodberry Forest 6-5 and beating Albemarle High School 9- 8, Fork Union 8-4 and Blue Ridge
10-3. Coach Goodnow notes the team is starting to play solid offensive and defensive lacrosse against the League's top teams. "People are starting to rec-
ognize," be said, "that VES is capable of winning evety game it plays." Much credit is due to Coach Arlotto, whose tireless work installing a new defensive scheme has really paid off on the fielei

Gaels made a last ditch effort to catch VES, scoring six runs until
Sligh made a falling down catch to save the game leaving the
winning run at the plate.
The second game was against
Hargrave Military. The cadets scored a single run on an error in
the first inning; that would be their only score. The VES bats
produced four runs in the first •
and then shut off Hargrave in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom another four runs were scored by
the Bishops. But the highlight of the game came when William Sligh smashed a three run shot
into the back side parking lot of Banks-Gannaway. William went on to pitch a 3 hitter with 0
set back with a loss to Collegiate.
On that cold day the bats just
wouldn't swing. On the good side
Cox continued a 7 for 12 hitting streak.
