The Outdoor Challenge Program
Field Hockey
by Bethany Coleman
A new sport, girls' field hockey, has arrived on campus this fall. The interest was much greater than expected and the coaches, Ms. Cat tie Schmidt and Mrs. Laura Gray Mundy, are feeling positive about the season ahead. The girls have been practicing
since the first week ofschool. For many of them, it was the first time they had ever played field hockey. Progress was slow, but after weeks of dedicated practice
and patient coaching, the team is showing great improvement. They are excited about the games corning up and encourage ev~ry one to show their support.
Cross Country byRobHing
Cross Country came up on September 2 to run in the Blue Ridge Mountains to prepare for this year's fall season. The prepa-
ration has paid ofT. the team's first meet was at North Cross in Roanoke where V.E.S. was nar- rowly defeated, but V.E.S. came back and soundly defeated Blue Ridge. The Cross Country team
has participated in three invita- tional meets, at Woodberry For-
est, Lynchburg College and U.Va. V.E.S. placed Seventh out of ten schools at Woodberry,
fourth out often public schools at L.C., and did well at U.Va. Cross Country's strongest runners, Morgan Huff, Herndon Stokes, Rob Martin, Jim Christian and King Evans have really helped the team. Coaches Bloor, Burke,
and Goodnow believe this should be a strong season for the team.
