In 1916, about seven months be- fore the first school session at VES, Thomas K. Nelson, first Dean of Faculty, suggested to Bishop Jett that the school ought to be a military school with "military uniform, and discipline, and a certain amount of drill in the school . .." Fortunately for us today this idea was never taken seriously. FACULTY-The av- erage faculty salary for the first school session (1916-1917) was be- tween $600 and $700. In fact, math teachers were paid more than Eng- lish teachers because of the higher demand. Is this really equal pay for equal work?
