Promises Made Promises Kept
Nineteen hundred three was a good year for beginnings. In that same year the Wright Brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk; the Unit- ed States began the building of the Panama Canal ; in an aban- doned building in Detroit, Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company; and a preacher and four businessmen bought an old hotel as the site for Lynchburg College, which they had just founded.
Within each of these begin- nings was a promise of enor- mous potential, which was ful- filled in the coming of the age of aviation, the joining of the world's two largest oceans, the age of the automobile, and the impact that a small college has had on thousands of young men and women.
The spirit of all those early pi- oneers is wonderfully captured in the inscription on the base of the monument to the Wright Broth- ers on that high, windy hill on the coast of North Carolina at Kitty Hawk - "Conceived by genius, achieved by dauntless courage
and indomitable faith." That is the spirit which has sustained Lynchburg College, informed its vision of the future, and made reliable the promises it has made to society and its students.
To society, Lynchburg allege has promised to help fulfill the
potential of America's most pre- cious developed resource -
educated young men and wom- en. To the rising generation, it promises to help each of them find and develop his or her
" best self." The commitment to both is that promises made are promises kept.
Congratulations on 75 years from Lynchburg College
