Its progressive in every sense of the word: Greenwood offers a truly unique approach to teaching and personalized learning, and it builds on and refines that approach with every year that passes. The 2018-2019 school year was no exception. Guided by our strategic plan, Venturing Further, Greenwood again found more ways to deliver personalized learning for students while ensuring that all members of our community feel supported and valued. A highlight of last year was the schools collaboration with Dr. Greg Wells. Dr. Wellsa physiologist, exercise medicine researcher and professor of kinesiologyworked with students and staff throughout the year to infuse health and well-being into the curriculum. Moving forward, Greenwood intends to build on this work to further educate students, staff and parents on the core principles of well-being.This is only one example of the innovative programming that would not be possible without strong support from the Greenwood community. I am deeply grateful for the financial support from current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, staff and friends that enables Greenwood to move ahead on the leading edge of learning, and to drive the schools mission and strategic plan forward. My sincere thanks also go to Greenwoods principal, Sarah Bruce, for her outstanding work in her first year, as well as our staff, volunteers and Board of Directors for their exceptional dedication to the school.I look forward to seeing what the coming year will bring.Donald LewtasChair, Greenwood College School Board of DirectorsGreenwood Annual Report 2018\/2019 2'","3":"b'PRINCIPALS MESSAGE SARAH BRUCEThe 2018-2019 school year was the third under the guidance of our current strategic plan. The plan was developed with the goal of enhancing Greenwoods ability to provide a customized learning experience for students, and encouraging the building of character and community. Six priorities for Greenwood over the coming years were identified; I am happy to report on our ongoing progress in all of these areas.1 Invest in the Greenwood Centre for Teaching and LearningAlong with Mary Gauthier, Executive Director of the Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning, Expert Teachers worked with teachers and emerging leaders on developing coaching conversations with students and with colleagues. Expert Teachers were supported in this work by completing another level of coaching training. As a way to give experienced Greenwood teachers additional opportunities for growth, teachers who have worked at the school for 7+ years can now choose to work on an independent project that deepens their expertise and their focus on student learning. The model for our Mentoring Program was revised based on feedback from the previous years new teachers; the design of this program is informed by research on the needs of adult learners in a new community. We also recognize that its important to value the expertise within the school; to this end, we created short videos where teachers discuss teaching at Greenwood, and an increasing number of teachers have provided professional development to their colleagues.Greenwood Annual Report 2018\/2019 3'","4":"b'2 Manage the Transitionto Our New CampusSeptember 2018 marked two years since the transition to our expanded and renovated building. Now that students and staff have adjusted to the space, our efforts have focused on finding additional ways to make use of the facilities and to expand and refine our programming. We planned and implemented Phase 1 of our Innovation Lab renovation, redeveloping the space and adding new equipment. The Lab established many connections to projects within different courses and extracurriculars and hosted our weekly Computer Assisted Design (CAD) Club. We added Coordinator positions for the Outdoor Education and Athletics programs; the added capacity in these areas allowed for new initiatives including our three Athletics Awards Assemblies and the Paddling Film Festival. We took advantage of our increased gym space by starting a recreational badminton team and we refined the use of the theatre to enable more groups to access the space for presentations, guest speakers and speech competitions. 3 Address the Changing Needs of Students Across the GradesA major focus for 2018-2019 was implementing a more intentional literacy development process for students. As part of this process, all Grade 7-9 students completed reading assessments; personalized interventions were recommended for students based on assessment results. We also hired a Literacy Coordinator to oversee the literacy development process for all students. We shared strategies and structures with teachers around supporting student learning at each grade levelin particular, how to engage students and keep them on task. Our new age-and-stage framework, developed during the 2017-2018 school year, was successfully implemented within the co-teaching model, ensuring that co-taught classes are targeted to each grades unique needs. Alumni survey data about specific academic skills and programs was used to revise programming in certain subject areas; for example, senior science classes now include training on the style of lab reports used by postsecondary institutions.Greenwood Annual Report 2018\/2019 4'","5":"b'4 Enhance our StudentAdviser ProgramWe implemented a timetabled Adviser course for Grade 9 students and connected the Grade 10 Adviser program to the compulsory Careers course. This means that every student from Grades 7-11 has the opportunity to take a timetabled Adviser course and sees their Adviser for a much longer period of time each week. The change increases Advisers ability to support students development of social, emotional, academic and executive functioning skills and provides more opportunity for intervention when necessary. Our Adviser report card completed its second year; Advisers and students can use this document as a jumping-off point for targeting student growth within the pillars of character.5 Educate our Communityon the Core Principlesof Well-BeingWe introduced Well-being Wednesday to the Adviser program in 2018-2019. The Wheel of Well-being drove this program, with lessons targeted to each grades age and stage and focusing on mental, physical and emotional health. Wellness expert Dr. Greg Wells also spent the year working with students; he spoke regularly as assemblies, made himself available for student questions and consulted with teachers on the development of our wellness programming. Our school social worker, Lori Houzer, increased her availability to four days per week and supported many students throughout the year. We added improvements to the Fitness Centre space and purchased new fitness equipment. We eliminated cell phone use during school hours for Grade 9 students and eliminated gaming for all students, encouraging them to have more meaningful in-person interactions. The student-led Jack Chapter again raised awareness around mental health through open conversations and initiatives. The group added wellness tips to the schools weekly e-newsletter, curated helpful online resources and ran a robust Mental Health Week.Greenwood Annual Report 2018\/2019 5'","6":"b'6 Create More Opportunitiesfor Graduates and Their Families to Stay Connected with GreenwoodWe extensively surveyed our alumni about their needs and wants for a Greenwood alumni program. The results of this survey drove us to formally establish the schools first Alumni Executive. The groups goal for 2019-2020 is to establish one or two new initiatives surrounding mentorship and social events for graduates. We hosted our most well-attended alumni event ever in May 2019, with over 200 grads and current and past staff joining us. We established official United Kingdom and New York City Alumni Chapters to bring together alumni living in those locations. Survey feedback on our Campus Ambassador program, which pairs graduating students with alumni at their postsecondary institutions, was again very positive; schools where this program is offered include McGill, Ryerson and McMaster. We provided several opportunities for parents to make connections with other Greenwood families, including a parent speaker series, a parent book club and parent socials.Greenwood Annual Report 2017\/2018 6'","7":"b'REVENUE AND EXPENSES:GREENWOOD COLLEGE SCHOOLREVENUE BREAKDOWN for the year ended June 30, 201988 %Fees5 % Contributions7 % Other RevenueEXPENSES BREAKDOWN for the year ended June 30, 2019STUDENT LEARNING AND PROGRAMS8 %Student Learning3 %Student Programs59 %Teacher Compensation2 %Information &Communications TechnologySUPPORT 3 %Administration & External Relations16 %Staff Compensation9 %FacilitiesGreenwood Annual Report 2017\/2018 7'","8":"b'FUNDRAISING REPORT:GREENWOOD COLLEGE SCHOOLAND GREENWOOD COLLEGE SCHOOL FOUNDATIONThis past year was a big one for the school with the welcoming of Sarah Bruce as Greenwoods third principal. Students, staff and parents made Sarah feel very welcome and her positive impact was felt throughout the school. The Class of 2019 graduated 80 students. They went off to many exciting postsecondary destinations, from the University of Manchester in England, to St Francis Xavier, Dalhousie, Mount Allison and NSCAD on the east coast, to many other destinations in Canada, the US and the UK.We welcomed one new family into our Wernham-West Society, which celebrates and thanks families who have given $100,000 or more to the school through their cumulative giving. As a school, we saw our Annual Appeal experience tremendous success thanks to our generous and highly engaged parent community. The school raised just over $500,000; a significant portion of those funds was allocated to the enhancement of our health and well-being programming and services. The parents of the 2019 graduating class generously donated to the newly created Class of 2019 Fund, contributing just shy of $100,000; this fund will support financial assistance for future generations of Greenwood students. Thanks to the support of our parents, grandparents, staff and alumni, we are able to enhance the facilities and programming at the school in ways that would not have been possible otherwise. This September, we officially cut the ribbon on the schools new Innovation Lab, which was built by our communitys generosity.Last June, the number of alumni we serve increased to 1,004. This is a significant group of grads that are now out in the world accomplishing many great things in highly diverse lines of work and areas of service. Greenwood helped to give these alumni the launch pad they needed to be successful, and your generosity is so important in allowing us to do the work we pride ourselves in doing.Thank you for making such a profound impact on the lives of our students.Jamie LougheedExecutive Director, AdvancementGreenwood Annual Report 2018\/2019 8'","9":"b'GREENWOOD COLLEGE SCHOOL FOUNDATIONThe Foundation is a separately incorporated body that manages and oversees endowmentfunds established through philanthropic giving to support Greenwood College School. The financial statements for the Foundation as at June 30, 2019, showed total assets ofjust over $3.8 million. The following funds are held in the Greenwood College School Foundation:THE CLASS OF 2006 FUND THE CLASS OF 2012 FUNDEstablished by a leadership gift fromEstablished through the generosity ofMargot Franssen and Quig Tingley, andthe Class of 2012 families, the Fundthrough the generosity of the Class ofsupports student financial assistance.2006 families, the Fund supports student financial assistance.
