Since arriving at Greensboro Day School, I have witnessed the tremendous value of a GDS education and the power of our learning community. For 49 years, the school has graduated smart, ready-for-whats-next, young adults and launched them all over the country and, eventually, all over the world. Some return to Greensboro and find a multitude of ways to rejoin their school. Others keep the school in their hearts as they pursue their careers taking time to remain connected, via social media, email, or visits to campus. We started the school year full steam ahead and kicked-off the semester with the 50th Anniversary Celebration, the highest new student enrollment in five years, and the addition of two-year-olds! We finalized the Strategic Plan, accepted an invitation to join three other independent schools for a professional development partnership at the School of St. Jude in Arusha, Tanzania, enrolled students in a new pilot program with Wake Forest University, hosted an honor code training for middle and upper school students from across North Carolina, and joined the Global Online Academy - an opportunity to engage in collaboration with leading independent schools around the world. Ultimately, it was a semester of teaching and learning leading to tremendous growth and opportunity. As we begin the second semester we are excited to build on our progress as individuals and as a school. We will continue to learn and grow together, building relationships that no doubt, will last a lifetime. I invite you to learn more about whats next for GDS at The State of the School, on January 21, 2020 - a chance to hear from me about the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan and my vision for the future of GDS. Please join us in the Sloan Theatre, at 7 p.m. You can read more about the program online at greensboroday.org/sots. As we move further into the spring semester, we will celebrate our teachers, learn about college acceptances, plan curriculum and classes for the next school year, graduate the Class of 2020,and continue to celebrate our 50th year. I hope you will join me on campus for our culmination celebration on May 2, 2020, Studio 50. I look forward to connecting, reconnecting, and celebrating with many of you on May 2!Greensboro Day School is on the move because of YOU, and I thank you for your support in moving Greensboro Day School forward. With Bengal Pride,Tracie CatlettHead of School'", "4": "b'1 Heads Corner CONTENTSAROUND CAMPUS5Letter from the Chair 8Campus News 12Bengal Bites 16Arts Report 20 Sports Report FEATURES24 Brooks Sabbatical26 TEEF Grant Highlights28 50Forward Endowment Campaign30 Faculty Focus: Emilee TransouALUMNI31I Am a Bengal 32Alumni News 46 Class Notes52 Where Are They Now? 54 Memorials STUDIO 50MAY 2, 2020ACADEMICOPEN HOUSEAge 2 to Grade 12Sunday, January 263 - 5:30 p.m.RSVP at greensboroday.org/openhouse4 | Winter 2019'", "5": "b'LETTER FROM THE CHAIRDear GDS Community,The 2019-2020 academic year offers our Greensboro Day School community unique opportunities to celebrate our rich history and to look to the future with great excitement. The attendance at our 50th Anniversary celebrations so far has been outstanding. Alumni fromeverydecadehaveattendedeventsinNorthCarolinaandbeyond, manypast parents have reconnected with GDS, and former faculty members have led the way in commemorating milestones in our history. At the same time as we celebrate our past, the excitement as we plan for our future is palpable. Tracie Catlett, our seventh Head of School, has hit the ground in Greensboro at a sprint and has proven to be every bit the dynamic leader we expected when she was named to the position. There is great energy in all three divisions, among students, families, faculty, and staff. The Board of Trustees is focused on key initiatives designed to move our School forward during this time of great momentum. First, GDS has initiated a 50th Anniversary Endowment Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to raise our permanent endowment by over $8 million, to the 20 million dollar level. This effort, ably led by co-chairs Chuck Keeley 81 and Merrill Keeley, is off to a great start, and the response from our community to date has been extremely positive. Meeting this goal is imperative for our school, as the endowment growth will afford us greater opportunities to invest in our faculty and students, while at the same time making us a little less tuition-dependent on an annual basis. In addition, in December 2019 the Board of Trustees adopted a new Strategic Plan for GDS. This Plan is the culmination of much hard work and insight by a large number of people. The Plan has specific, measurable action items to enhance the GDS experience for our students, families, faculty, staff, and alumni. We are focused on program excellence, enhancing our learning spaces, ensuring long-term financial strength, and promoting a larger public purpose in our efforts.I invite everyone to join us during the spring semester as we continue to celebrate our past and to plan for our future. Ms. Catlett will present a State of the School address on January 21, 2020, during which she will provide details of the Strategic Plan and of the vision for GDS going forward. There will also be numerous celebrations throughout the semester of our 50th Anniversary, and we would love to see everyone at these events as well. A New York Times bestselling author of The Pressured Child, Raising Cain, and Understanding Independent School Parents he is an international speaker and a frequent presenter on the topic of adolescents. The evening was a huge hit and was conceived by the first GDS Board Chair 35 years ago.Charlie McLendon, the first board chair at GDS, left the boardroom in 1973 but never ceased supporting GDS. The Charles McLendon Founders Society continues to recognize those individuals who have made provisions for GDS in their estate plans. Such arrangements may take the form of a bequest, the designation of GDS as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the establishment of a charitable trust with GDS as the beneficiary, the assignment of a title to a primary residence, or other planned gift arrangement. Gifts are designated or restricted according to the donors wishes, like creating a speakers fund to ensure that GDS has broadly educated teachers.Membership in the McLendon Society signals the donors understanding that the future of the School is a priority now in planning for the ultimate gift upon their death. The result of the McLendon planned gift is dynamic programming that, in part, provides for teacher education.
