The Great Blue Heron is about 50 inches long and about 4 feet tall when standing. It is lean, bluish-gray with white around the neck, long legs and neck and a dagger-like yellow beak. It flies with slow wing beats and with its neck folded and has a harsh deep croak. The heron lives around water where it stands or wades to feed, grabbing small fish, frogs and birds with its beak. It will also catch small mammals on land.
Herons usually nest in groups. The female builds a large platform nest from sticks and other materials brought by the male. Both male and female incubate the eggs.
The great blue herons seen in the wetland area are very shy.
