Buckeye Butterfly

This butterfly, with a wing span of about 2 1/2 inches, varies in color from greyish to brown. It is found in open areas, such as swamp edges, and the caterpillar feeds on a variety of plants including plantains and stonecrops that are found in the wetland area.

There are mass migrations of buckeyes in the north-east as they cannot overwinter in the northern states.
