Green Heron
Butorides virescens

The green heron is a smallish heron (about 20 inches tall) with reddish-brown chest and neck, blue-grey back, and yellow legs. It is seen perching in trees of the wooded region of our wetlands, or wading through water and vegetation. It has a harsh croak or cackle. The shape of the heron varies, depending on whether or not its neck is stretched.

The heron in the upper photograph is walking along the benches of the outdoor classroom. At least one heron nests at our wetlands.
