Eastern Kingbird
Tyrannus tyrannus

The kingbird is a type of flycatcher. It is 7 to 9 inches long. Distinguishing features are a broad, horizontal white band across the end of the tail and a rather square-topped head. The kingbird feeds on insects which it catches both in the air and on the ground. It has a harsh, strident call and distinctive quivering flight.

Kingbirds live in open country and can sometimes be recognized by their somewhat horizontal posture as they perch. They are very aggressive, and will harass or chase other birds within their territory. They even attack larger birds, such as crows and hawks, diving down towards the invader's back.
