Ring-Billed Gull
Larus delawarensis

Gulls are often seen over the Cumberland River or around puddles on the athletic fields. A flock of about 200 ring-billed gulls was seen in winter after heavy rains when there were pools of standing water on the fields. Ring-billed gulls are about 19 inches, have greenish-yellow legs, and have the distinctive black band around the yellow beak. Immature birds, in their first year, are speckled brown. These birds nest in colonies in the northern states.

The other gull species found inland is the herring gull which is slightly larger, has pink legs and a red spot on its yellow bill.
