This is a tall plant with alternate lanceolate leaves coming off the unbranched stem. Many scarlet, tubular flowers come off the tip of the stem. The flowers do not contain nectar, but they attract hummingbirds who probably eat insects on the flower. The Delaware and Cherokee used root extracts medicinally although the plant contains a paralyzing alkaloid (Lobeline).
