Field Thistle
Cirsium discolor

This is a native thistle found in the eastern part of North America. The upper leaves cluster around the base of the flower and the leaves are lighter on the underside. It is typically found in fields, open woods, and waste ground and is found on the periphery of the wetland area.

The field thistle is a favorite flower of the River Campus butterflies. The one shown here is a spicebush swallowtail.
