Leaves have long, pointed tips and rounded bases and are somewhat hairy. The bark is light gray and rather smooth, but it becomes covered with dark warty knobs and deep ridges in older trees. The fruits, known as sugarberries, are eaten by many birds. There are large hackberry trees in the wooded part of the wetland area.
