Irises: Yellow flag (Iris pseudacorus) and Southern or Virginia Blueflag (Iris virginica).
These plants are similar in size (2 to 3 feet high) and structure, except for the color of the flower. They grow in the water or in moist areas, particularly near the center of the northern boardwalk and the beginning of the southern boardwalk.
Yellow flag was originally introduced from Europe, escaped and is now found in the wild.
Virginia blueflag is similar to Iris versicolor which is the blueflag found further north.
The rhizome, although poisonous, was widely used by Native Americans for different medicinal purposes according to tribe. The name "flag" for iris comes from the Middle English word "flagge" which means reed.
