Umbrella Sedge or False Nutsedge
Cyperus strigosus

Members of the genus Cyperus are commonly known as umbrella sedges because of their radiating, umbrella-like stalks in the terminal umbel. This sedge has distinctive clusters of brownish-yellow flowers in diverging spikes with long, slender, leaf-like bracts immediately below. The narrow flat leaves are at the base of the plant. Birds eat both the seeds and the creeping above-ground stems (stolons). This sedge is found in open wet places and provides cover for a lot of animals.
