I am eominccd that tho society began with the fulfillment
of its object-to create and foster a taste for literature and literary efforts-but how it has fallen from this purpose, only to become a place where a certain set of boys try to be funny and show off. Lack of. seriousness of purpose is cer-
tainly well displayed here! .And what a pity-a literary society can be of such good influence in a school. There is nothing so useful to a ma~ as the ability to speak, and nothing more embarrassing than to be called upou if be is
incapable. The Literary Society of your school is the place to leam. Some day it would tickle me to sco some of the discordant clement of our Society in this latter predicament; I havo a mean disposition in that respect. But all of you ·who h:n·c the good of the school at heart realize the good the
Society can do, and it is to you that the task is assigned of making it so. I hope that yon are the majority and will bo able to elect officers from yonr midst who will haYe tho determination to make the Society a factor, and the courage to usc their powers as officers, knowing that you are behind them. There bas not been a fine paid during the ,-;bole year.
Could there be order in the school room if none of the demerits were eYer walked? It is going to be a difficult and delicate process to get things normal again, but it can be doHe. Intercat must be stimulated, and it would help if the
Society competed in the Yirginia .A.thletic and I.iterary League. It might e,·en be a good idea to amend the constitu- tion and make it nccessaQ' for a person to be elected to lllembership in the Society- in this way undesirables can be excluded. Bnt if this is not done, don't join unless you
