138 THE METEOR
The baseball season comes last for consideration. Out of the rather loose play aggregation of early spring there has been evolved a bard-hitting team, which has in the other de- partments of the game developed an excellent degree of &kill and ability. While the number of victories has not been great, with the exception of the l3lackstone game, all the contests were close and intercstiug.
Capt. Buckner during the season led the way with the stick, and in general leadership and playing has given his teammates an inspiring example. His fine work bas resulted in his being reelected to lead the team in 1~22.
The prospects in this sport for next year arc excellent, for in common with the other teams, a large proportion of the present squad will return. Another considerable addition from the standpoint of coaching should be found inl\Ir. Keff, who will bring us the advantage of professional training as coach. In fact, we shall be extremely well off in this 1·espect, so well in fact that the secondary baseball sqnads should be much better d~velopedthan they ever were at any time this spring.
From what has been said above, it can easily be realized that V. E. S. should have little fear of the future athletic- ally. The policy, early adopted in our career, of developing our teams as far as possible from the boys who have grown up with us through a number of years, has justified itself un- mistakably this year, and should prove more and more Yal- uable each season. In fact, the value of this work from many standpoints is so considerable that every effort should be made to have it include all of that very considerable portion of the school which is not on the fhst squads.
The spi.rit of the teams has been excellent, and their gen- eral deportment commendable. Here at least, we have much with which we can be satisfied.
