Tho greatest surprise of tho season came on November 19th, when we dropped our final game to Lynchburg High SchooL The Hilltop brigade offered us the stiffest opposi- tion encountered during the whole season and on several oc- casions threw our backs for losses. Ncverthelcss our back- field men got off for long gains, Terry repeatedly circling tho ends for from fifteen to thirty yards, while Loth and Leo
gained consistently. Lynchburg's diminutive quarter-back, Ross, was their best performer. He managed the team well and made several long runs. Smith also showed excellent ability in making gains through tho line. The playing of the two teams seemed to be about evenly matched. Our op-
ponents made more ground than we, but we greatly out- classed them in punting and passing, Loth making several 60-yard punts.
Wo threatened to score right at tho start, advancing the ball to Lynchburg's 20-yard line. Wo then lost the baH·on a fumble. During the rest of tho half the ball remained almost
. entirely in the middle of the field. Tho third quarter saw us reach Lynchburg's 22-yard line only to lose the ball again on a fumble. Our opponents then carried the ball down the field and the period ended with them on our 3-yard line. At
the start of the final quarter it took Lynchburg 3 downs to advance the ball 1 yard. On the next play Smith carried the OYal over_. Ross failed to kick goal. For the remainder of the ~me we pressed our opponents hard, fighting viciously to ·stave off defeat. Pierce carried the ball on the kickoff back to where it was kicked from. Then a long pass to Fra-
zier and a few line plays placed the pigskin on Lynchburg's 7-yard line. Had there been a little more time, we most probably should have scored but bore the gamo ended.
