Heddie, the rat, was cautiously raisi11g the window when two men appeared from around the corner. Rcddic quickly slipped down, hugging the side of the house. Thanks to the moon's being under a dark cloud at that moment, Recldie was sayeu .from discoYery. The two men passed on. They were boasting of their city police system.
After the men had gone, Reddie once more began his task of getting into the small window that looked out upon a vacant lot. When once inside the house, Reddie looked about him and found that he was in a bedroom. There was a man asleep in the bed close by. This fact he was able to ascertain by the loud snoring of the sleeper. Reddie felt at case to help himself. This he proceeded to do.
On going through the clothes ]eft hanging on a nearby chair, Reddie found nothing of value. ITo was forced to look elsewhere for swag. When he came to the dresser, he found a gold watch, an alarm clock, and a purse that ap- peared to be well filled. Reddie almost laughed for joy, for there in plnin sight lay the means of an easy time for at least a couple of weeks. Visions of all the things that he would do arose before his mind's e:·e, and he could hardly wait to open his treasure and explore its depths. Having grasped his prize and gone to the ·window, where a pale stream of moon- light floated in, Reddie opened his purse. To his keen dis- appointment and utter di::~~st he only found a two-dollar bill and three ones.
