As he ga1.od into her eyes, a flood of fancies took possession of his mind,- fancics that he had harbored many times before this momentou· occasion, bnt which had always seemed a part of the distant fnturc-clistaut, unnttninablc, -but now, possible with her so close,-so close that there was no possible escape,-closc enough that he might even feel the touch of her silken hair upon his hand to assure himself that he was not dreaming; and these fancies kept suggesting a small bungalow, a garden and that sort of thing. It was at this point that he was brought out of his reverie by a query from his companion, a query that stirred his mind to action and set him thinking, thinking deeply and fast. H e thought of her vast wealth- a nd shonl(l he allow that to mnke any differencc-wollld be be treating her fair~ All of this and lots more passed tl1rough his mind in a flash, but realizing he mnst speak, he braced himself and spoke to her very gently.
At the sound of his voice and the comprehension of his words she seemed to wince slightly; there '"as a breathless pause, but finally came he1· slow but unmistakable as·ent.
She arose and they bo9I walked towa1·d the door, which he opened. • Here she hesitated pensively, as if turning something over in her mind. Finally, looking up at him, she murmured, "Do you really think it worthwhile?"
"Without a doubt, )!adam," r,eplied the doctor, "haviug those teeth removed and plates put in will improve ~·our health remarkably." She seemed convinced now, and pnssed from the office.
