Last September even the most optimistic V. E. S. suprorters felt ~lownh earted a b o u t t h e B i s h o p s ' chances of a successful gridiron
campaign. Only six lettermen had returned from last year's mediocre team, and the remaining material was untried and green. October came and the team began to show possibilities-with a 34-0 victory over Miller School in the opener.
Then on the following Saturday, the Garnets, rated strictly as underdogs, played heads-up football all the way to gain a well-earned 10-0 win over Woodberry Forest. Two tough mili-
tary opponents, Augusta and Fish- burne, came up in the next couple • f week-ends and the Bishops hit their peak by taking them in stride,
19-0 and 12-0 respectively.
At this point the team had covered
itself with glory and appeared des- tined to become one of the greatest in the school's history. The Bishops were undefeated, untied, and un- scored-on, with three games to go.
The team had clicked as a unit and
each individual player continued to
improve each week.

FoRT DEFIANCE, May 7.- Getting their first victory of the season in prep competition the V . E. S. nine trounced A. M. A., 6-1, here today.
The Bishops kept well ahead the whole game in spite of a horseshoe possessed by A. M. A. and a very strange field. John Dashiell was the star of the day, getting two triples,
and making a beautiful catch in the ninth.
In the second, Reagan, after pounding out a triple, scored on AI Whitaker's single for the Bishops'
first tally. Gaining momentum, V. E. S. added a run in the third, two
in the fifth, and two in the sixth. Staples batted in Augusta's lone tally in the sixth.
Peeler, mound performer for V. E. S. the whole game, had the best day at bat for the Bishops, getting
a walk and three hits with four of- ficial times at bat. Livik, pitcher for the losers, proved easy meat for the Bishop batters after they caught on to his curve ball.
All in all the Bishops played tip-
top ball, showing vast improvement
