A Cabin With a Past
Last month Troop 7 continued the renovation of its cabin started last year by Mr. H ammond. New window panes were installed, a new floor in the rear room put in.
The history of the old cabin con- tains many gaps. There is evidence that it is one of the oldest buildings on the campus. The floor joists are hand hewn, as sound today as when they were installed.
One rumor has it that the build- ing was a country school house many years ago. Certain it is that it was in use as a tenant house when the Scott family owned the present school property. It survived the fire which destroyed the main house more than thirty-five years ago.
Later when another main house, the present infirmary, was occu- pied by l\fr. and l\Irs. Volney E.
lloward, the cabin was allowed to deteriorate, then was restored and a porch added. It was used as a tenant house.
\Vhen the property was old to Bishop Jett for the use of Y. E. S., the cabin was relegated to the role of storage house for odds and ends. Jt was not until Re,·. Edgar Ham- mond, the school chaplain, last year was casting about for a loca- tion for a hobby shop, that the cabin started to come into its own. Mr. Hammond, Mr. Kehrer, and a group of the older boys rebuilt the chimney, constructed a handsome open fireplace, and generally redec- orated, refinished, and refurnished the building.
This year Troop 7 has taken on the job of seeing that the school's oldest building is treated with that respect which is clue to one that has li\'l·d a long, honorable, and varied life.
