Five Victories, Seven Defeats Last Saturday the '44 basketball season terminated for the Bishop cagers, as they bowed to the Saints,
48 to 30 in Richmond.
After a fast start with victories
over South Boston, Massanutten, and Hargrave, and a setback at the hands of Woodberry, the Bishops had an optimistic outlook for th:! rest of the season. However, a lucky Fishburne quint with the aid of a couple of freak baskets turned back the Garnet five in a low scoring tilt at Waynesboro. A loss to Fork Union and another victory O\'er Hargrave prepared the Bis- hops for the all-important second encounter with \Voodberry, which pro\'ed disastrous.
The Bishops hit their stride a few days later and edged Fork Union in a tight battle, 34 to 32, but a strong Episcopal five downed the Garnet and White the following Saturday. Fishburne turned back the Gallop- less Bishops in a rough return game, and the season closed in Richmond as the powerful Saints took the up- per hand. .
liard luck, influenza, and long trips severely handicapped the Bis- hops as many expected victories turned into heart-breaking losses. The games were marked with the outstanding all-around play of Cap- tain Billy Gallop and Robbie Lee, the high scoring of Andreae Hodg- son and "AI" Williams, and the steady defensive play of Graham Koch.
Fishburne 29, V. E. S. 22 Feb. 2- A determined second half rally by a scrappy V. E. S. basket- ball team failed by eight points to overcome an early Fishburne Mili- tary School lead, and the Bishops suffered their second setback of the season, 29 to 22. The game wns
played on the Fishburne court. Captain Billy Gallop of the Bis- hops played the entire game and dropped 111 five goals to lead his team with 10 points. Forwards Andreae Hodgson and "AI" \Vil- liams, accounted for five points each. \Villiams went out on fouls
late in the contest.
The Bishops never got started
during the first two periods and their loose play enabled Fishburne to pile up a half-time lead of 19 to 6.
H owever, Captain Gallop started the scoring after the half and the Bishops pulled within striking dis- tance just before the final whistle.
V. E. S. 53, Hargrave 38 Feb. 10-Led by Andreae Hod~·
