I had hoped to stop in Lynchburg
before I reported. It happened so fast ...
I got my degree in political science. Our entire class totaled about 250. There were only SO N. R. 0. T. C. sen- iors and only 20 got degrees. That isn't a very good showing. Paul (Simmons, '40) and I were really split up for the first time in about 7 years. He reports aboard the "U. S. S. Denver" today ...
I was fort unate. I got destroyer s. I am now going to the Destroyer Schools here at Naval Operating Base in Norfolk.
Paul and I differed on the ships. I w a n t e d somethin~ I w a s s u r e w o u l d see action. He asked for the cruiser; it is a little more stable, and he thought he would learn more there . . .
I .arrived last week, and I have com- pleted one school specializing in heavy anti-aircraft.
\Ve have nice quarters here. It re- mindsmeofV.E.S.inthatweall sleep in one big room (no stalls). We don't have to sweep out or make the beds, however. This being an officer is spoiling me . . .
(The course) lasts 7 days a week from 8 to 2:30; plus physical educa- tion. This really gets me . . .
... I hope I can get a chance to go soon because I have been waiting so long that I want to get in and get it over with ...
Looking back on college I am a little disappointed. This war has kind of messed me up . . . I don't think I learned much more than I did at V. E. S. A number of us from various
