SPORTS I
From the Sidelines
By Frank Aldred
The 1946 Garnet and White bas-
keteers, following in the footsteps of their football predecessors, have ab- sorbed defeat in their four initial games. The Bishop quintet put up a brilliant fioht against a much taller Hampden-Sydney JV squad, but lost in the waning minutes of the game, 35-25. At Chatham, the boys got off to a fast start against the Hargrave aqqreqation, but soon relinquished their lead to the Tigers, who were never headed and went on to win, 29-23. The W oodberry ga .lle was far from evenly matched. The Orange and Black proved to be just too tall, too fast, and too qood! The final score: 58-18, Woodberry. At Fork Union , the Bishops played headsup ball all the way, but could not stop Gedisco who pushed 22 points through the hoops, in leading the Cadets to a 58-33 victory.
With the loss of Sprague, Captain Ballou is the only letterman remain- ing, with Betty the only non-letterman from last year's squad. With so little experience a whirlwind team can hardly be expected, but as the season progresses the boys should round in- to top shape, and are expected to win some games.
Baby Bishops
Thus far the two JUnior basketball teams are fighting it out to see who will use the floor in the afte·noon a f t e r varsity practice. The 15- year-olds are under the direction of Mr. Grail, while the 17-vear-olds are being coached by Mr. Milton.
The IS-year old team has played four games, 1osing three and winning the last by the score of 23-25. The starting lineups are Maddux and Marshall at guards; Wellford and Lewis at forwards, and Taylor, S. at center. On the second team are Finch, Braxton, Macleod, and Cor- nett.
The I7-year olds have played only two games and have met do(eat in both, first at the hands of the Glass JV and next in a sad game with t'1e Yellowjackets. The former marked the first athletic contest between V.
E. S. an:l E. C. Glass for over 15 years. The experience and height of the Junior Hil'toppers proved too much for the Bishops who put up a
6
valient fight to the end. The starting lineup for the 17-year olds is Barge and Stieglitz at guards; Goode and Nutt, R. at forwards; and Aldred at center. The second team is Thoma s and Hardy at guards; Rell and Og- den at forwards; and Chen}' at cen- ter.
In the most recent game between the two squads the 17-year olds licked the IS-year olds to the tune of 41-24. The game was featured by the clippinq and body blocks of " Big Boy" Cornett and the smooth 19 points by "Smoothie" Aldred.

season to the Hampden-Sydney Jun- ior Varsity, 35-25. The game was played in the Barksdale Gymnasium.
V. E. S. got off to a fast start, and the first period ended nip and tuck 5-4 in favor of Hampden-Sydney. The Bishops fought hard to regain the lead which they had held briefly at the start, but were unable to go ahead aqain. Hampden-Sydney led at the half 17-9.
In the second half the visitors were never in real danger although the Bishops were in the running at all times.
Miller, the center, led the Hamp- den-Sydney attack with 13 points. Martin, a forward was next, with II points to his credit. Kemper was high point man for V. E. S., making qood on three goals and a free throw for a 7-point total.

scored a 58-18 victory over Virginia Episcopal School in the Barksdale Gymnasium.
W oodberry dropped in seven points before Ballou was able to break the ice for the Bishops, but the Orange team forged steadily ahead after that and led at the end of the first quarter by the score of 24-5.
Woodberry used subs freely in the second half, but were still too tall and too fast for the Bishoos.
