Hayseed Hop!
There was big doin's on the V. E. S. · nis courts on the tenth. The Hop Committee, with help from Shannon Snir 1ey, hired a hillbilly b a n d a n d staged a regular ol' fashion' squar' donee. (See cut.)
For once, blue jeans and shirt-tails weren't frowned upon, as the style was for everybody to come dressed
'ke farm fellers and gals. Vernon Dawson was a big gun* as a county sheriff 11nd Billy Nutt and Scott Taylor, who went as ravishing misses, were ;ust outstanding.
By eleven o'clock most everyone was plum w o r e o u t f r o m " d o - c e - dom · and 'swingin' his partner."
What with bubble gum and all day suckers, which were distributed during ntermission, the dance was agreed by
all to have been a huge success.
A Talented Alumnus
On March 9 Mr. Bank's second section of English V had a very enter- taining talk by Mr. Henry Grano- wska, an alumnus of the school. Mr. Granowska is an actor, and he gave some excerpts from Shakespearean plays and also recited other well known poems.
Mr. Gra nowska was born in Kiev, Russia, of Polish parents. He came to this school from Cuba and was here from 1936-1939. After graduating from the University of Virginia he be- gan his career as an actor. He has acted in New York City and in the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford-on-Avon, England. Lady Astor, finding that he is an alumnus of V. E. S., helped him get a position in the Shakespearean Theatre. He probably would not have been able to act there without her aid in secur-

He is now getting ready to open his own theatre in St. Louis.
