A Simple Solution For A Difficult Problem
Seventy-five days have passed since the Virginia Episcopal School inaugurated it's thirty-fourth year. During this time most of the evils that exist in our society have been brought to light. Notable among these malignancies is the appear- ance of a common enemy known as picking. Actually if the word "pick- ing" is burned down we can clearly see that it is just a euphemistic name for "stealing."
We are not stating that the V. E. S. student body consists of a group of thieves, but we are plainly emphasiz- ing the fact that some of the stu- dents have a tendency toward that seeming harmless evil pickinq. Most boys never even stop to realize that prying into someone else's desk and borrowing a book for a short while is
·a form of picking. More serious than this is the act of breaking into an- other boy's locker. Indeed such an act as this is very wrong, but to a small per cent of the students it i$
neither a crime nor a matter which warrants concealment.
Leave alone things that do not be- long to you. The principal reason for the great number of lost books is that boys continue to borrow books which do not belong to them. This is hurting our "Honor System," and if such matters continue to flourish, our traditional code of honor may be completely a wreck. From little acorns do big Oaks grow. How true this is when applied to life! A small boy takes a toy soldier from a ten cent store counter and twenty years later that same boy has become an arch criminal.
This is a crude example, but it shows how a little infraction can grow and grow until a major disaster occurs. Are we doing what we can to prevent such a calamity? If not let us begin today!
The Meteor suggests that the boys take the following pledge and mean it: I promise on my honor never to open another boy's locker or to take anything from another boy's desk.
