Basketball
After careful consideration we offer our all-opponent basketball team.
Ist team
Ben Curtis- St. Christophers-For-
ward; tallied forty-one points against Bishops in two games.
Ballard Morton - W oodberry- forward; best set-shot artist V. E. S. faced all season.
Charlie Gamble- E. H. S.-center; despite poor showing against V. E. S. he stood head and shoulders (literal- ly and figuratively) above opposing centers in state.
" Rabbit" Howard - Hargrave- guard; lightning fast and a dead shot. Wainwright Richardson- St. Chris-
Seven returning lettermen give Coach Johnston the nucleous of a potentially potent nine. The other lettermen, Dick Carrington and Cul- len Bradley are devoting their talents to other sports.
Pitching seems to be the chief concern of the Bishop baseball men- tor but this department has showed considerable promise in early drills, Buddy Aldridge, a southpaw with worlds of speed and a good curve looks like an ace. Letterman Billy Thompson who should improve his last season's record, and Joe Crute, who is still suffering from injuries suffered during basketball season will prob- ably round out the top three. Tabbed for relief duty is Charlie Brooks with three years J. V. service behind him.
The mitt and pad department should be no problem with J ohnny Barlow, an excellent receiver and qood hitter, and veteran Shannon Shirley both present. One of these two will probably see duty in the out- field as both are good hitters.
The infield is probably the strong- est department on the club. At the initial sack, Howie Pitt, who has all the physical assets of a first baseman, and who drives a long ball, will prob- ably get the call.
Jack Stoughton letterman of last season, and a good hitter and new comer Layden Wood, who has looked exceptionally good in early drills and staging a hot fight for the keystone position.
tophers-gua rd; best play Bishops saw all year.

maker
John Ho!t-Hargrave-forward.
Bernie Peterson-Fork Union-for- ward.
"Gus" Garcia-St. Christophers- center.
Vint Rathbone-E. H. S.-guard. Ralph Williams-E. H. S.-guard.
Baseball
With twenty-two hopefuls answer- ing Coach Hal Johnston's calls, prac- tice began last week for what promised to be one of V. E. S.'s best baseball teams in many years.

SPORTS
A t shortstop, another letterman, Fred Woodward, a good fielder, but weak hitter, appears to have the in- side track but Horace Ray, a good hitter, is pushing hard.
Letterman Jim Riley and Doug Van Noppen are candidates for third base and it is hard to tell now which of these two will hold down the hot corner come opening day.
In the outfield three lettermen, Earl Johnson, John Thomas, and Fred Shilling should give adequate pro- tection but all except Johnson leave something to be desired in their hit- ting. Joe Crute, who has worlds of hitting power may be switched to the o u t f i e l d ~hould h i s d a m a g e d a n k l e prevent him from pitching. Steve Quillen, a good hitter, but poor field- er may be carried as a pinch hitter.
Spirit is hiqh, and barring injuries to key men the Bishops should com- pile a very respectable record.
Track
Forty-four candidates reported to Coaches Walter Galliford, and Cal- vin Wyatt last week to start the Bishops 1950 track practice.
Coach Galliford has only two re- turning lettermen and prospects for a successful season are far from bright. He hopes, however, to build a respec- table team around Len Muse, and Rod Quainton.
Muse, who captured the state prep javelin title a year ago, and who is also capable of throwing the discus and the shot, should enable the Bishops to hold their own in these de- partments.
Quainton is a good 440 man and may capture a good many points be- fore the season is over.
The rest of the squad will be made up of newcomers and members of last year's J. V. track team.
Cullen Bradley and Mac Proctor will probably run the dashes and may be surprisingly successful. Morris W arner is a holdover hiqh jumper and 440 man. Craig Whitaker, Hal Bennett, and Tom C reasy are counted on to do the distance running.
