Well, without the strength of mind and raw courage, no doubt Jeb would have been captured or killed.
When ''Stonewall ' was wounded at Chancellorsvil'e, Stuart took his place. He sure deserved it too, no other qeneral had a record like his, but before long Lee ordered him to return to the cavalry. We find it hard to criticize Lee, and I guess as little as oossible was said, because of every~ne's love fer Lee.
Jacksons men said that Stuart led them too recklessly against artil- lery. Old Jeb was never reckless,
because recklessness in war loses lives. When Jeb did somethin' he did it right. His well planned raids account for that. Jeb didn t think of his men as food for cannon, to be fed to the cannon and then for- gotten. He loved those men just like personal friends. If it had been pos- sible I guess he would have wanted to know em all.
No doubt now Stuart was the bes~ man to take over the " Foot Cavalry." He would have done well in any job, but the cavalry needed him more. There wasn't another cavalry man good enough, but there were other infantry men.
From Chancellorsville we followed Stuart on up to Gettysburg, and then over the longer and tougher ro.~d b a c k . B u t s t i l l k i l l i n ' y a n k e e s though. The " Black Horse" was still unequaled. The yankee's cavalry was gettin' a little better, they got so they would ot least fight. Heck this didn't mean anything though we still whipped 'em.
Sometimes we went around a wee bit hungry, and the horses looked a little tired, 'couse we were short on rations. Didn t stop us from fightin' though. Jeb's last dispatch before he was wounded was, "My men and horses are tired, hungry, jaded, but all right."
On that last day we were to ride, fight, cheer, and die together. Old Jeb was in very high spirits. We had successfully beaten off the bucktails on five attacks. Jeb was holdin' them out of Richmond until things could l~e made ready. This long road back had cut him deep, but he still had an unquenchable exuberance. He was to be spared from the sorrow of the complete defeat, from the burden of surrender and criticisms.
Yet it would ~ave seemed strange to think of it this way on that day 'cause we still had the spirit. Maybe it's wrong to lose spirit after your
leader dies. but how could we help it? There was no one soldier enough, man enough, daring enough to lead us the way he had.
I was there that day. Stuart had fired his last shot from his pistol when he sought to capture a yankee who was hiding under a fence. As he approached in his same old manner, ordering the yankee to surrender, the sought after man shot Stuart in the chest.
Oh may God have mercy on that yankee 'cause he shot the greatest, kindest and best loved man I ever knew. But such is war! After being wounded, our leader stuck to his sad- dle tellin his men to fight on and not

Such was the hero! "Jeb ' -'One of Jeb's boys."
'Deep in the hearts of all true cavalry men, North and South, will ever burn a sentiment of admiration mingled with regret for this knightly soldier and generous man."
we hear him exclaim, it's really been swell.'
